Why maintenance matters

Keeping your smile healthy after periodontal treatment takes more than a one-time fix—it takes consistent care. Regular periodontal maintenance helps protect your investment, reduce the risk of recurrence, and ensure your gums stay as healthy as your smile looks.

We recommend visiting us every three to four months (or more often, depending on your needs) for gentle spot scaling, root planing, and a full exam. At home, it’s important to brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and gently clean your tongue. A soft-bristled manual toothbrush works great—and electric toothbrushes are also a good option, though they don’t reach any deeper into pockets than manual brushes. Interdental cleaners like proxy brushes are ideal for reaching tight spaces and should be used once a day. Gum disease might seem like a mystery, but here’s what we want you to know—it’s actually pretty simple:

  • It’s caused by bacteria we all naturally have in our mouths.

  • Some bacteria are more aggressive and destructive than others.

  • Just like other diseases, some people are more susceptible than others.

  • And like high blood pressure or diabetes, there’s no cure—but there are effective long-term treatments that help you stay healthy, even if the bacteria are still present.

What increases the risk—and how to prevent it

Smoking + Tobacco

Crowded teeth, braces, and bridges

Anything that makes brushing and flossing harder can increase plaque and tartar. We’ll show you tools and techniques to clean thoroughly, even in tricky areas—and if needed, recommend orthodontics to help improve access and prevent disease.

Clenching or grinding teeth

These habits can worsen existing gum disease by increasing pressure on your gums and bone. If you grind your teeth at night, we may suggest a custom night guard to protect your smile.

Stress

Stress weakens your immune system and makes it harder to fight infection, including gum disease. Managing stress helps your body—and your mouth—stay healthier.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal shifts during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can temporarily increase gum sensitivity and inflammation. We’re here to help you manage those changes with extra care during these times.

Medications

Some medications can cause dry mouth, which increases the risk of gum disease. Let us know what you’re taking so we can adjust your care accordingly.
